2012 North Sequoia League Season Preview

Chowchilla, Kerman, Liberty-Madera Ranchos, Sierra, Washington Union and Yosemite are previewed for the 2012 season.

CHOWCHILLA REDSKINS

2011 Record: 8-4 (4-1)

Key Players:
DeVaughn Gaines, QB/S, Sr.; Troy Uphoff, RB/LB, Jr.; Dustin Gaither, RB/LB, Sr.; Sean Kinsley, WR/DB, Sr.

Strengths:
Frankly QB DeVaughn Gaines is a baller, plain and simple. Great athlete, rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season. Needs to show more of the ability to pass, after completing just 48.1 percent of his passes, but has two of his top three receivers returning to help him with that. He’s also an excellent safety and is joined in the secondary by Sean Kinsley. Junior Troy Uphoff and senior Dustin Gaither will lead the linebacking core.

Notable Stats:
DeVaughn Gaines—Pass: 48.1%, 906 yds, 11 TD, 7 Int. Rush: 1,069 yds, 13 TD, 6.3 avg. Def: 63 tackles, 4 Int.
Sean Kinsley—Rec: 8 rec, 168 yds, 3 TD. Def: 25 tackles, 4 int., 1 ff.

KERMAN LIONS

2011 Record: 0-10 (0-5)

Key Players:
Jay Beene, QB, Sr.; Basilio Gutierrez, RB, Jr.; Isaac Gonzalez, RB, Jr.; Franquez Harvey, TE, Sr.; Chance Dodson, WR, Sr.; Marcel Hernandez, WR, Sr.

Strengths:
The Lions have a total of 20 starters returning this year. The group took its lumps, but learned a lot from it. Basilio Gutierrez and Isaac Gonzalez will look to give the Lions a potent run game. QB Jay Beene will have some targets coming back, in WRs Chance Dodson and Marcel Hernandez and TE Franquez Harvey.

Notable Stats:
Not provided

Quotable:
“We have 35 returning players from last year’s team and 20 of those players made starts during the 2011 season. That is a huge turnaround compared to us entering the 2011 season when we only had three returning seniors.” — Chris Melgoza, Kerman head coach.

LIBERTY-MADERA RANCHOS HAWKS

2011 Record: 6-7 (2-3)

Key Players:
Sam McHatton, RB/OLB, Sr.; AJ Leon, RB/LB, Sr.; Mason Temple, RB/LB, Sr.; Brandon Hutchings, RB/DB, Jr.; Logan Doss, ATH/S, Sr.; Cody Sanders, OL/LB, Sr.;

Strengths:
Pounding the ball. With RBs Sam McHatton, AJ Leon, Brandon Hutchings and Mason Temple in the fold, the Hawks will likely at least equal their 51.2 run plays per game average of a year ago. The linebacking core will be the strength on defense with the RBs playing LB, plus senior Cody Sanders.

Notable Stats:
Sam McHatton—Rush: 1,199 yds, 10 TD, 7.1 avg.
AJ Leon—Rush: 1,117 yds, 6 TD, 4.7 avg.
Brandon Hutchings—753 yds, 7 TD, 5.7 avg.

Quotable:
“After losing in the Division V Valley Championship Game two out of the last three years, this group is focused on getting over the hump.” — Mike Nolte, Liberty-Madera Ranchos head coach.

SIERRA CHIEFTAINS

2011 Record: 3-9 (1-4)

Key Players:
Kyle Barcus, RB/WR/S/OLB, Sr.; Clay Jones, QB, Sr.; Casey Blunt, QB; Cody Skaggs, Sr.; Dominick Macias, Sr.; Casey Jones, TE/DE, Soph.; Joe McFarlane, C, Sr.; Justin Harper, LB, Jr.

Strengths:
Offensively the Chieftains will be running the flying pistol with fly motion out of the shotgun. RB/WR/S/OLB Kyle Barcus is the Chieftains best all-around player and will be playing all over the field. Overall Sierra will involve the entire team and will not look to any one player to carry the team.

Notable Stats:
Kyle Barcus—Rec: 26 rec, 317 yds, 2 TD
Cody Skaggs—Rec: 9 rec, 139 yds, 2 TD
Clay Jones—Rec: 12 rec, 113 yds, 1 TD. Def: 27 tackles, 3 int,
Justin Harper—Def: 76 tackles, 1 int
Quotable:
“Our strength will be our unity. The kids are good friends, they’ve grown up together. It’s good group of kids. People usually say that, but it actually is.” Rob Hastie, Sierra head coach.

WASHINGTON UNION PANTHERS

2011 Record: 14-0 (5-0)

Key Players:
Greg Wilson, WR, ; DeMelvin Stell, WR/CB, ; Javon Harrison, RB/LB, Jr.; Landon Barberich, QB, Soph.; Elijah Beukers, OL/LB, Jr.; Jerry Guynes, K, Sr.; Edward Ramirez, DT/OL, Sr.; Josh Hobbs, DT/OL, Sr.; Eric Moreno, CB.

Strengths:
Although maybe not to the same level, but Washington Union still has athletes and still has speed. DeMelvin Stell was a little overshadowed last year and will have a chance to more fully display his playmaking abilities. The offensive line should be strong and experienced this year. RB Javon Harrison is strong runner and has worked on increasing his speed. New head coach Dennis Randall will keep the same offense and a lot of the offensive production will depend on quality quarterback play.

Notable Stats:
Javon Harrison—Rush: 391 yds, 5 TD, 6.7 avg. Def: 21 tackles, 2 sacks
DeMelvin Stell—Rec: 23 rec, 445 yds, 4 TD. Def: 25 tackles, 1 int
Elijah Beukers—Def: 82 tackles, 2.5 sacks
Greg Wilson—Def: 36 tackles

Quotable:
“We’re going to throw the ball around and do our best to get the ball into the hands of our athletes.”

YOSEMITE BADGERS

2011 Record: 4-7 (3-2)

Key Players:
Joey Woolsey, QB, Soph.; Bobby Magee, G/DT, Jr.; Josiah Madison, RB/DL, Sr.; Josh Curtis, RB/LB, Sr.

Strengths:
Yosemite will have a new starter at just about every position in 2012. The Badgers however bring back QB Joey Woolsey, who started the final two games of 2011, as a freshman. However the Badgers lost every player that had even 100 yards from scrimmage last year.

Notable Stats:
NA
