Balanced attack leads Mendota to D5 Valley title

After Firebaugh tied the game in the second quarter, Mendota scored 29 unanswered points to roll to a 50-22 win and the Division V Valley Championship on Friday in Mendota.

The Aztecs took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, but Firebaugh responded with a pair of touchdowns to tie the game, 14-14.

But it was all Aztecs from that point on, as they scored 29 unanswered points and outscored Firebaugh, 36-8, the rest of the way.

Mendota was led by quarterback Junior Cardenas, who completed 13-of-24 passes for 283 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Fabian Jasso caught four of those touchdown passes, as he finished with four receptions for 93 yards. Fellow Aztec receiver Julian Cardenas caught seven passes for 113 yards.

Mendota running back Marquez Navarro led Mendota with 13 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns, plus he caught a 71-yard touchdown pass.

Firebaugh’s Tylor Palmer led the Eagles in both rushing and receiving, as he carried the ball 13 times for 74 yards and caught three passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Jeshua Gutierrez also contributed 10 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown to the Firebaugh run game.
