Burrell shines in crucial Bulldog win over Nevada

Bakersfield High and College graduate Brian Burrell put together one of the finest performances of his Bulldog career in Fresno State’s crucial 40-20 road win over Nevada on Saturday.

Burrell accounted for five touchdowns in a game the Bulldogs needed to win to keep their bowl eligibility and conference championship hopes alive.

Nevada cut the Bulldogs lead to just one point at 21-20 with 2:06 remaining in the first half on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cody Fajardo to Don Jackson. The touchdown appeared to set something off for the Bulldogs and they began to go to work.

Fresno State scored 19 points from that point while holding Nevada scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Burrell completed 25-of-46 passes for 313 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, plus he rushed 14 times for 56 yards and another score.

The Bulldogs as a team rushed for 238 yards, led by running back Josh Quezada with 24 carries for 119 yards, plus he also led the team with seven receptions for 58 yards.

Fajardo was effective with his feet for Nevada but was hit-or-miss in the passing game. The senior signal caller completed 11-of-24 passes for 126 yards, a touchdown an interception, but rushed 22 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

Tyeler Davison led the Fresno State defense with seven tackles, including 1 1/2 tackles for a loss. Linebacker Karl Mickelsen also had a big game, recording five tackles, a sack, an interception and breaking up a pass.

Former Clovis West standout Donavon Lewis recorded four tackles and a sack for the Fresno State defense.

Lewis’ high school teammate Kendall Brock caught two passes for 12 yards for Nevada. Edison graduate Rykeem Yates recorded five tackles and 1 ½ sacks for the Wolf Pack.
