Curiel’s big night leads Tehachapi to win over Sunnyside

Running back Marcus Curiel carried the load for Tehachapi but the Warriors’ passing game picked its spots to exploit the Sunnyside defense for big plays, as the Warriors narrowly defeated the Wildcats, 35-28, on Friday in Tehachapi.

Curiel carried the ball 26 times for the Warriors for 149 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. His 44-yard touchdown run in the third quarter proved to be the game winner.

Tehachapi quarterback Bobby Howell only attempted six passes but completed four of them for 136 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. His two touchdown passes were a 68-yard completion to Wyatt Vance and a 47-yard reception by Cory Lange.

Sunnyside running back Errian Wingfield helped keep the Wildcats in the game with a big night, and he rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Senior quarterback Andy Phimmavong completed 4-of-6 passes for 88 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions for the Wildcats. All four of his passes were caught by Patrick Johnson.

Tehachapi will move on to play at top-seeded Garces on Friday.
