Drillers grind out win over Frontier

Frontier had the defending state champion drillers on their heels, but second-ranked Bakersfield grinded out a 19-7 win at home on Friday.

Frontier’s Elijah Hill connected with Brady Serda for a 59-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and the Titans’ 7-0 lead held until halftime.

Bakersfield’s Lameshio Hill scored on a 55-yard rushing touchdown, but the Drillers missed the PAT kick. The Titans still held the lead, at 7-6, heading into the fourth quarter.

But in the final frame Marcus Bruce gave the Drillers a 12-7 lead on a 19-yard touchdown run. Minutes later Curtis Hampton gave the Drillers some cushion with an interception and a 45-yard return for a touchdown.

Hill led the Drillers with 22 carries for 148 yards and a touchdown, plus he completed 3-of-7 passes for 42 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Bruce added seven carries for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Frontier was led by Nick Santora’s 22 carries for 76 yards. Serda finished the game with three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.
