Drillers lock up 37th Valley Championship in school history

In a back-and-forth battle for the Division I Valley Championship, Bakersfield locked up its 37th in school history with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to give the Drillers a 21-14 win on Friday.

With the game tied, 14-14, Josh Maran connected with Navonte Demison for a three-yard touchdown pass for the clinching score for the Drillers.

Maran, who battled back from a serious injury this year, went 12-of-18 for 121 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.

Neither team led by more than a touchdown and the squads were tied, 7-7, going into the fourth quarter.

Central gained 231 yards on the ground, led by Jevon Bigelow with 11 carries for 171 yards and a touchdown.

With the championship, Bakersfield will make its first appearance in the CIF State Championship Playoffs since its State Championship run in 2013.
