Editor’s Top 25: Preseason 2012

Bakersfield has too much talent coming back from a team that had a special year and made a strong argument to deserve a place in the CIF Division I State Championship Game.

The Drillers earned the preseason No. 1 ranking.

Preseason rankings are so speculative, that they’re based a little on tradition, a lot on returners and sometimes just come down to a sneaky suspicion.

Edison has a ton of talent, but we’ll have to see how first-year coach Ricky Manning manages it.

Other schools like Clovis West, Frontier and Stockdale have potential and seem to be the perennial media darlings with big preseason expectations. However with the exception of Clovis West in 2010, those three struggle to live up to those expectations.

Then there’s always the “drinking the Kool-Aid” rankings, and I guess I’m drinking the Mission Oak, Tehachapi and El Diamante Kool-Aid.

In any regard, take these with a grain of salt …
