Former Coalinga standout and COS running back Brian Alvarado has committed to play football for NAIA program Dakota State University in Madison, S.D.

Alvarado led the section in rushing in 2010 with 2,569 yards and 31 touchdowns his junior year, while guiding the Horned Toads to a Valley Championship game appearance.

He followed that up with another 2,000-yard season his senior year, but didn’t land any offers out of high school.

“I’ve been underestimated my whole career, being from a smaller school, but I’m set out to prove world wrong,” Alvarado said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to play somewhere else.”

After graduating from high school, he spent the past two seasons playing for the College of the Sequoias. But he remained under the radar until catching the eye of the Dakota State coaching staff.

“The coach told me he definitely likes the way I run and could change some things around in the offense,” Alvarado said.

The terms of his enrollment are still being worked out, but he will likely received a combination of both financial aide and scholarship to attend the university.

Alvarado hasn’t visited the campus yet, but he’s looking to take trip out there sometime this week and excited to see what the future holds.

“I’m going to take this opportunity and see where I go from there,” Alvarado said. “I’m out to make a name for myself.”
