Gaines puts on another show to advance to semifinals

Chowchilla quarterback DeVaughn Gaines continues his tear through his senior year, as he led his Redskins over Coalinga, 34-19, to advance to the Valley playoff semifinals.

Gaines particularly put on a show in the third quarter, as he rushed for three touchdowns, including a 59-yard run before the half.

Gaines ended the night with 22 carries for 141 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 3-of-6 passes for 45 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Despite falling behind 27-7 after Gaines’ third touchdown, the Toads battled back and cut the lead to 27-19 in the third quarter.

But a 24-yard Dustin Gaither touchdown run put the Redskins up 34-19 and Coalinga was unable to put any more points up on the board.

The Toads were without their leading rusher and possibly best player in Ryan Vasquez who sat out after being injured last week in a hard-fought victory over McLane.

Senior Damian Ribera did an admirable job filling in, rushing for 135 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Casey Cole also added 10 carries for 52 yards on the ground.

In additon to Gaines’ performance, Gaither rushed 13 times for 72 yards and a touchdown and Troy Uphoff carried the ball six times for 69 yards and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass.
