Hughes, McDaniel combine for 296 yards in Hanford repeat

Seniors Jojo McDaniel and Juju Hughes combined for nearly 300 yards from scrimmage to help Hanford lock up its second straight Division III Valley Championship in a 42-28 win over San Joaquin Memorial.

McDaniel led all rushers with 26 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown and Hughes led all receivers with six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown in what may be their last game in front of the Bullpup faithful.

Hanford also received a big performance from receiver Brandon Sanchez, who caught four passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Ryan Johnson completed 11-of-23 passes for 285 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions, plus he rushed 10 times for 60 yards and another touchdown.

Memorial got on the board first with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Michael Alvarez to Chris Paz, but Hanford responded with a pair of touchdowns before half, to take a 14-7 lead into the break.

Hanford extended the lead to 21-7 on 24-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Sanchez in the third quarter.

The Panthers battled and pulled within a touchdown a couple times in the second half, but couldn’t erase the deficit.

Joey Ruiz led Memorial with 28 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns, plus he caught a 44-yard pass.

Alvarez completed 11-of-22 passes for 176 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Paz was his top receiver with five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown.
