Martinez scores 2 defensive TDs in Chavez victory

Hugo Martinez scored two defensive touchdowns to go with a touchdown catch in Chavez’s 40-7 win over West on Friday.

Martinez, a defensive lineman, recovered two fumbles and returned both of them 38 yards for a touchdown. Offensively he caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Deion Perkins.

“It was very fun,” Martinez told the Bakersfield Californian. “But I couldn’t have that much fun without my team. They help me through everything.”

In addition to Martinez’s two fumble returns for touchdowns, Juan Rodriguez recovered a fumble and returned it nine yards for a touchdown.

“Turnovers are a killer,” said West coach Mark Camps. “Ball security is something you preach. Last week we had a good week with it; (Friday), not so much. That’s on us, but we don’t want to take any credit away from (Chavez). They play good defense, and we knew that coming in.”

On the offensive side of the ball for Chavez, Perkins went 10-for-19 for 183 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

Damian Avila led Chavez with 26 carries for 128 yards.

West’s sole touchdown came on a 52-yard pass from Christopher Coleman to Josh Boyd.
