Mathews, Chargers clinch playoff berth

West graduate and former Fresno State standout Ryan Mathews had a triple-digit rushing performance to help his San Diego Chargers clinch a playoff berth with a 27-24 overtime win over Kansas City.

Mathews carried the ball 24 times for 144 yards, but did not reach the end zone.

The Bakersfield native ended the 2013 season with 285 carries for a career-high 1,255 yards and six touchdowns, with a 4.4 yards-per-carry-average.

After struggling with fumbles early in his career, he only fumbled twice this season and lost just one of those.

The Chargers ended the season with a 9-7 record, earned a wild card berth for the playoffs and will face the AFC North Champion Cincinnati Bengals for the first round of the playoffs.
