Mathews scores TD in Monday Night season opener

West graduate and former Fresno State great Ryan Mathews broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run in his San Diego Chargers season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football.

But it wasn’t enough, as the Cardinals came away with an 18-17 win to start the season.

With about six minutes left in the third quarter, Mathews lined up at fullback and quarterback Phillip Rivers handed him the ball on a dive up the middle. He found enough space, bounced it to the outside and took it to the house.

At the time, it gave the Chargers a 17-6 lead with 5:33 remaining.

Mathews ended the game with 12 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown in the contest.
