Hanford West hung with undefeated, eighth-ranked Hanford for nearly three quarters before the Bullpups pulled away and took a 55-34 victory in the annual Dog Bowl on Friday.

Hanford West trailed just 26-20 until about two minutes remaining in the third quarter, when Hanford scored on a nine-yard run by Nathaniel Hunt. The Bullpups added a two-point conversion and gave them just a little breathing room with the score 34-20 entering the final quarter.

Hanford would go on to outscore the Huskies 21-14 in the final frame to hold on for the win.

The Dog Bowl returned to the Bullpups after the Huskies had won the past two Dog Bowls.

“I’m very happy for the team that they got the Dog Bowl back,” Hanford coach Josh Young told the Hanford Sentinel. “But the biggest thing is we’re 1-0 in league.”

Joseph McDaniel led the Bullpup offense with 155 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries in the rivalry win.

Quarterback Ryan Johnson went 11-for-14 for 197 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Vincent Romero rushed 20 times for 152 yards for the Huskies.
