Mendota pulls away from Firebaugh in 2nd Half

Mendota-2894

Edgar Segura put together another signature performance, but the defense proved to be the difference as Mendota pulled away in the second half in Mendota’s 43-12 win over Firebaugh on Friday in the annual Battle for 33.

Segura rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, plus he caught two passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Early on it looked like the game was going to be a battle to the end, as Firebaugh cut the deficit to 14-12 on a 30-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Christian Patlan with 1:37 remaining in the first half.

However about a minute later, Segura caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Estevan Trejo and the Aztecs never looked back.

Trejo threw a total of three touchdown passes in the game to Segura, Jose Quinteros and Juan Mendoza.

The Mendota defense limited the high-powered Firebaugh offense to just 187 yards of total offense in the game.

Mendota has won four of the last five games in the annual Highway 33 rivalry.
