No. 19 Tulare Western knocks off No. 11 Porterville

Each week, No. 19 Tulare Western continues to leave onlookers dumbfounded. This week it was the Porterville faithful, as they watched the 11th-ranked Panthers fall to the Mustangs, 28-13, on Friday in Tulare.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 21-0 lead heading into halftime and the Panthers could not climb out of that hole.

Four different Mustangs scored touchdowns in the game and quarterback Kobe Portillo threw a pair of touchdown passes.

Juan Flores led Tulare Western in rushing with 21 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Portillo went 12-for-21 for 187 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Javier displayed his versatility, rushing 15 times for 54 yards and catching four passes for a team-best 86 yards and a touchdown.

Noah Salazar also caught a pair of passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Tulare Western’s fourth score was a one-yard touchdown run by Corey Juarez.

The Mustang defense for the most part kept the Porterville rushing attack in check, limiting the Panthers to 26 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Jones led the group with 13 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Porterville quarterback Dennis Chester had his moments, particularly a 72-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hefner, but ended the game just 10-of-24 for 208 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Lalo Nevarez caught five passes for 103 yards, but was kept out of the endzone.

Both the Mustangs and Panthers are 5-2 on the season, but Tulare Western improves to 2-0 in league play, while Porterville fell to 0-2 against league foes.
