Ortiz boots game-winner in Sunnyside comeback

Sunnyside capped off a 23-point four-quarter comeback with a 36-yard game-winning field goal by Jose Ortiz in the Wildcats’ 36-35 win over San Joaquin Memorial on Friday.

SJM quarterback Michael Alvarez extended his Panthers’ lead to 35-13 with a two-yard touchdown run in the final quarter.

However Sunnyside responded with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Nate Hughes to Bruean Heights. After a pair of redzone touchdown runs by Marcus Hawkins, the Wildcats were back within two points.

Ortiz then sealed the comeback with a 36-yard field goal.

Hawkins ended the night with three touchdown runs and Hughes threw two touchdown passes.

The three-headed Memorial rushing attack of Alvarez, Dashawn Holliman and Justice Palms combined for more than 300 yards.
