Sharp ends Exeter comeback, Wasco advances to semis

After a furious comeback, Wasco’s workhorse running back Isaiah Sharp tore Exeter’s hearts out with a 58-yard touchdown run and seal a 42-28 home win for the Tigers on Friday.

Wasco advances to the Valley semifinals with the win, as the Tigers defend their Division IV Valley title.

Wasco jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. Exeter got on the board with a touchdown in the second quarter and Wasco scored a touchdown in the third, to take a 35-7 lead into the final quarter.

However Exeter reeled off three unanswered touchdowns to cut the lead to 35-28 and a legitimate chance to win.

But that’s when Sharp sunk the dagger into Monarchs’ hearts with his 58-yard touchdown run.

Sharp ended the game with 229 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries in the win.

Fellow Wasco running back Terrance Grinner was limited on the ground to 13 carries for 38 yards, but still rushed for two touchdowns. He also caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Austin Sutton.

Exeter’s feature back Austin Cardoza led the Monarchs with 15 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown.

The Monarch’s backup quarterback Javier Brito came in and completed 9-of-16 passes for 144 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, to help bring his team back in the game.

Alex Cortez was Exeter’s top receiver with four catches for 79 yards. Chad Zeibak added five receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown and Brendan Washington caught a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Wasco will travel to face top-seeded Mission Oak next Friday.
