Sierra hangs on for big win over Chowchilla

The Sierra defense contained Chowchilla’s offense, as the Chieftains scored a significant victory by edging the Redskins, 20-19, on Friday.

The Chieftains limited Chowchilla quarterback to 54 yards rushing and 33 yards passing and one touchdown through the air.

Sierra took a 20-7 lead in the third quarter on a 24-yard return on a fumble recovered by Casey Jones.

But the Redskins pull themselves back into contention on fourth quarter touchdown runs by Fernando Martinez and then Danny Chavez, to cut the deficit to 20-19.

After Chavez’s touchdown run, the Redskins elected to go for a two-point conversion, but the Chieftains stopped the run, giving Sierra the win.

Sierra quarterback Brent Smith led all rushers with 13 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown, plus he completed 4-of-9 passes for 37 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.
