Solis’ big game carries Famersville to semifinal win

Strathmore came out with a game plan and was going to make things as difficult for Farmersville quarterback Sam Metcalf as possible, but a 5-foot-6 sophomore running back came up big for the Aztecs.

Jose Solis rushed nine times for 151 yards and two touchdowns in Farmersville’s 27-22 home win on Friday to put the Aztecs in the Valley Championship Game for the second straight year.

Strathmore came out prepared and ended the first quarter with a 13-7 lead and took a 16-15 lead into halftime.

But Farmersville took the lead with a pair of touchdown runs, one by Solis and another by Metcalf, in the third quarter.

Strathmore scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Farmersville was able to hang on for a 27-22 win.

Metcalf, Farmersville’s outstanding sophomore quarterback, completed 10-of-21 passes for 133 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Not the worst performance by a quarterback, but far from the numbers Metcalf is used to putting up.

The win advances Farmersville to Valley Championship Game against Mendota, in a rematch of last season’s Division VI title game. This year it will also be played in Mendota.
