South Yosemite League Season Preview in alphabetical order. Be sure to vote for the 2010 Preseason SYL Player of the Year in the poll to the right.

Golden Valley
2009 Record: 3-8 (1-5)
2009 Scoring: 13.7 PFpg, 32.3 PApg

The Bulldogs look to capitalize on a league change, after going 1-5 in Southeast Yosemite League action in 2009.

Golden Valley has the luxury of bringing back a quarterback with valuable varsity experience in Derek Martin, who threw for 1,076 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. But Martin will go into 2010 with an inexperienced receiving unit.

Defensive back Jordan Gruber, the Bulldogs’ leading tackler a year ago with 91, returns to lead a squad that is looking to improve upon the 32.3 points per game it gave up last year.

Mira Monte
2009 Record: 5-6 (5-1)
2009 Scoring: 23.3 PFpg, 28.9 PApg

Without a single senior on the team, Mira Monte won a share of the 2009 South Central Sequoia League Championship.

Last season running back Timothy Harris led a dominant rushing attack with 1,451 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, as a sophomore. Harris will be joined in the backfield by quarterback Anthony Rios and Jesse Flowers, who each rushed for more than 400 yards last year.

Although Mira Monte is more noted for its rushing attack, Rios will have his top target from 2009 back in Bryant Guyton, who caught 20 passes for 434 yards and six touchdowns.

Defensive end Miguel Ortega, who led the squad with 72 tackles and four sacks, will return to anchor the Lion defense.

2009 Record: 7-6 (2-4)
2009 Scoring: 25.5 PFpg, 22.3 PApg

Despite traditionally being a rush-heavy offense, the Wolf Pack receiving corp will be one of the strongest points on the team. Ridgeview has six players returning who had at least six receptions last year, including leading receiver Jacob Spears, who caught 30 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns.

Last season’s second leading rusher Donte Malloy will look to take over primary rushing responsibilities this season.

2009 Record: 6-5 (2-4)
2009 Scoring: 31.5 PFpg, 27.0 PApg

Running back Odail Crumb will look to lead South to a South Yosemite League title which is up for grabs in 2010, with realignment within the section making a major impact.

Linebacker Chantz William and defensive lineman Tyshon Hodges will return to anchor the defense.

2009 Record: 4-7 (3-3)
2009 Scoring: 26.5 PFpg, 26.2 PApg

Truth is West just hasn’t been the same since Fresno State legend and current San Diego Charger Ryan Mathews concluded his high school career. Not to say Mathews was the only reason for the Vikings’ success, but the downfall correlated with his graduation.

West is coming off a 4-7 season and have a long way to go to return to compete for any type of title.

DB Fred Wilson has drawn attention from some colleges and was compared to Chicago Bears corner Charles Tillman by retired NFL-vet Cameron Worrell in a recent article.
