The lights were on Friday Night at Groppetti Community Stadium in Visalia as high school football kicked off another season with the Miners of El Diamante taking on the Mustangs from Tulare Western.

The Mustangs would open the 2016 season with a 28-7 victory, thanks in large part to a stingy defense that held the Miners offense to only eight first downs the entire game and under 200 yards of total offense. Offensively, the Mustangs were led by senior quarterback Andre Aguilar, who completed 15 of 20 passes for 179 yards and 3 TDs. He would also contribute another 113 yards on the ground on 20 carries as the Miners could not find a way to stop Aguilar’s read option.

Tulare Western would take the opening kick-off and march down the field, capped off by a 9 yd touchdown pass from Aguilar to Pedro Hernandez. The conversion was blocked and TW would take a 6-0 lead into the second quarter where they would again find the end zone on a 2 yd TD plunge by junior Mason Bernardo. This time, the Mustangs would go for two and convert as Aguilar found Dominic Sanquintin to give them their halftime advantage of 14-0.

El Diamante would come right back though, as they would take the second half kickoff and go straight down the field, capping the drive off with a 3 yd keeper by Andrew Valdez and conversion to make it 14-7. The backbreaker for the Miners would come later in the third quarter. Facing 4th and 9 from the Miners 26, Aguilar found senior tailback David Alcantar on a screen pass. Alcantar would do the rest, taking it to the end zone and giving TW a 21-7 lead. The Mustangs would add one more score in the fourth quarter on a 3 yd pass from Aguilar to Andrew Trevino for the final tally of the game.

Up next for the Mustangs, they will once again travel to Visalia next Friday night, as they will take on the Pioneers of Mt. Whitney High School. El Diamante will also be on the road next Friday, as they travel to Tulare to take on the Tribe from Tulare Union.
