Tulare’s Harris unloads on El Diamante

With the bright lights and sounds of cheering fans and marching bands surrounding him, Tulare running back Romello Harris proved to be too much for El Diamante, as he rushed for 333 yards on 30 carries and scored five touchdowns in the Redskins 41-14 victory on Thursday.

It may have just been the first night of the season, but Thursday’s contest at Bob Mathias Stadium was a game that could prove to be very huge in the eyes of the playoff committee come seeding time, as the Miners from El Diamante took on the host Tulare Union Redskins.

Tulare got off to an early start, taking the opening kickoff and marching right down the field before Harris scored his first touchdown from three yards to give Union an early 6-0 lead.

It would extend that lead to 14-0 by capitalizing on a Miner turnover on downs. Harris capped the drive off with an eight-yard run.

El Diamante would get back into the game on Keylan Liles first of two touchdown runs from six yards out.

The Miners got the ball to start the second half, but the drive was stalled when a deflected pass was intercepted by Tulare Union’s John Chamalbide. After another six-yard TD run from Harris, Liles scored his second touchdown of the game from ten yards away to trim the Redskins lead to 20-14.

But that was as close as the Miners would get, as Harris would once again delivered for the Redskins, this time from 25 yards, to extend the lead to 27-14.

Up next, the Redskins will travel down to Bakersfield to face the Rams from Garces next Friday while the Miners will host their home opener against the Wildcats from Sunnyside.
