It may have only been the second week of the season, but the Clovis East Timberwolves may have watched a star in the making before their eyes last night in their 41-24 win over the Redwood Rangers in Visalia.

Marcus Washington, only a sophomore, had 23 carries for 196 yards to go with four touchdowns as the Timberwolves running game proved to be too much for Redwood.

Clovis East quarterback Trey Semien had 144 yards on the ground, as well as 15 of 21 passing for 124 yards and two touchdown passes. Overall on the night, the Timberwolves outgained the Rangers 344-166 on the ground.

The other factor that spelled doom for the Rangers was their 5 fumbles on the night, three of which were recovered by Clovis East.

It was a game that looked to be going down to the wire after the first half of play. Redwood took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to take an early 3-0 lead on a Cooper Allen 25-yard field goal.

After Washington gave Clovis East a 6-3 lead with a 19-yard td run, Allen would scoop up a Clovis East fumble on their second possession and take it back 25 yards to give Redwood a 10-6 after the first quarter.

The second quarter would provide fireworks for both sides and three lead changes. Clovis East would go up 14-10 on a 23-yard pass from Semien to Tanner Tucker. Redwood would respond when Redwood QB Frankie Ayon threw a screen pass to running back Justin Williams, who took it 73 yards to put Redwood up 17-14. Clovis East then took a 21-17 lead into the locker room following Washington’s second rushing td of the game from 9 yards out.

The third quarter was when it fell apart for the Rangers, as Clovis East would come out of the locker room outscore them 20-0, backed by td runs of 5 and 51 yards for Washington, taking a 41-17 to the fourth quarter.

Redwood would tack on a late touchdown on a one-yard run by Humberto Nunez.

Up next for the Timberwolves, they will take their 2-0 record on the road to Tom Flores Stadium next Thursday for a showdown with the also unbeaten 2-0 Sanger Apaches. As for the Rangers, they will travel to Tulare where they will take on Romello Harris and the 2-0 Tulare Union Redskins.
