West Sequoia League Preview — Caruthers, Fowler, Fresno Christian, Parlier, Riverdale

West Sequoia League Season Preview in alphabetical order. Be sure to vote for the 2010 Preseason WSL Player of the Year in the poll to the right.

Caruthers
2009 Record: 8-3 (3-1)
2009 Scoring: 32.8 PFpg, 16.3 PApg

With all the changes going on at Fowler, Caruthers may be the odds-on favorite to win the West Sequoia League, after finishing 3-1 in league play last year.

The Blue Raiders bring back a lot of firepower, including quarterback Josh Gilmore and running backs Brandon Gomez and Abraham Delgado.

Fowler
2009 Record: 9-3 (4-0)
2009 Scoring: 32.0 PFpg, 14.1 PApg

Over the past five years, Fowler has been one of the premier Division V schools in the section. Between the West Sequoia and the now-defunct Southwest Sequoia League, the Redcats haven’t lost a league game since 2004 and own five-straight league titles.

Fowler will have a lot of new faces in 2010, including head coach Steve Nelson. The defense has a handful of familiar faces returning including defensive back Guillermo Escalante and linebacker Josh Sanghera.

But the offense will have a near-complete overhaul. Except for the receiving core, including leading receiver Logan Porter (27 catches for 385 yards) and also Rigo Gonzalez (16 catches, 274 yards, 1 TD) and Conner Monis (17 catches, 251 yards, 3 TD).

Fresno Christian
2009 Record: 5-6 (1-3)
2009 Scoring: 27.8 PFpg, 27.1 PApg

After winning a combined four games between 2005 to 2008, Fresno Christian posted five wins in 2009, under second-year head coach Bonner Cunnings.

Fresno Christian will look to improve on that mark, but will have to do so with nearly a completely new lineup. Aside from RB/LB Andrew Evans, the Eagles don’t have much varsity experience.

Parlier
2009 Record: 6-6 (2-2)
2009 Scoring: 24.6 PFpg, 29.3 PApg

The Panthers have put together four-straight .500 or better seasons and will look to extend that streak in 2010.

Leading the Parlier offense will be running back Matt Garcia, who had a five-touchdown game last year in the season opener against Orosi.

Senior Joey Arredondo will lineup behind center and he will armed with a strong receiver core of Daniel Robles, Martin Torres, Jerry Cisneros and George Alfaro.

The D-line will be anchored by a trio of seniors — Jesse Zamora, Jacob Damian and R.J. Galaviz.

Cisneros will go both ways and will play linebacker on defense. He will be joined by Mario Torres.

The Panthers will depend on upperclassmen to guide them this year.

“The strength of our team will be our senior leadership,” head coach Rene Lopez said.

Riverdale
2009 Record: 1-9 (0-4)
2009 Scoring: 11.5 PFpg, 42.2 PApg

The Cowboys haven’t had a winning season since their 2004 10-win campaign, but will look to change their ways in 2010.
